Evolution can happen for lots of different reasons. Sometimes it is just a random mutation that changes DNA and changes something about the animal that is then passed on to it’s ancestors. Other times evolution can depend on the surrounding area, for example some birds have different beaks depending on what type of food is available in their habitat.

There are lots of theories on why we evolved, for example, we might walk on two legs instead of four (arms and legs) because it allows us to carry things, and reach higher places. It also allows us to move faster, escaping any predators.

Usually animals will evolve to make them better suited to something.
