I didn’t really know what to do after university, and one of my lecturers encouraged me to stay on and do my PhD ( a research degree). I am enjoying it so far, and want to stay on in research after I finish

I suppose I only really thought – ‘yeah I’m going to do this, be a full time research scientist!’ just before I started my PhD. I was working in a different job, science related, but not in research and I was given an opportunity to change my city, my career and my future all in one go. It was a tricky decision as I had a very good life, but the questions were just burning inside me and I knew that if I didn’t at least give it a try then I would regret it. I like to try things, and then if I fail, at least I tried. So I leaped!! And I’m so so glad I did. Yes there are things I miss about my old life and job, but I get to chase my ideas every day here and I feel really lucky to be able to do that.
