Question: why should we choose our soil wisely when choosing our agricultural land?

A farmer does not often have much or any choice over what agricultural land they manage. Their choice is normally, ‘given this land and its soil, how should I manage it’.
Along with decisions regarding what crops make a good return, and what crops they know how to grow, farmers should look to the sustainable use of their soil, so that it can continue to support farming. Working the land so hard that there is significant soil erosion and the organic matter is depleted may give greater profit for a few years, but those will go into sustained and long term decline that can be economically impossible to reverse.
