      For an engineer, the structural stability of loose mineral material. Will the ground take the weight of the building, or will it sink, shift, crack, slide down the hill.
      For me it is how soil forms, moves, interacts with water, the dissolved ions in it, the growth and movement of roots, bugs and animals through it, what happens to their dead remains (and poop), the exchange of gasses (O2 and CO2 particularly but also NOX) and what sort of agriculture and ecology it supports.
